Tidal thickening of galaxy disks

چکیده

We have studied a sample of 24 edge-on interacting galaxies and compared them to edge-on isolated galaxies, to investigate the effects of tidal interaction on disk thickening. We found that the ratio h/z0 of the radial exponential scalelength h to the scale height z0 is about twice smaller for interacting galaxies. This is found to be due both to a thickening of the plane, and to a radial stripping or shrinking of the stellar disk. If we believe that any galaxy experienced a tidal interaction in the past, we must conclude that continuous gas accretion and subsequent star formation can bring back the ratio h/z0 to higher values, in a time scale of 1 Gyr.

Observations of Interacting Galaxy Pair NGC 4038 / 9

We present the results of new radio interferometer H i line observations for the merging galaxy pair NGC 4038/9 (‘The Antennae’), obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The results improve substantially on those of van der Hulst (1979) and show in detail the two merging galactic disks and the two tidal tails produced by their interaction. The small edge-on spiral dwarf galaxy ESO...

The Spitzer Spirals , Bridges , and Tails Interacting Galaxy Survey

We present Spitzer mid-infrared images from a survey of three dozen pre-merger strongly interacting galaxy pairs selected from the Arp Atlas. The global mid-infrared colors of these galaxies and their tidal tails and bridges are similar to those of normal spiral galaxies, thus this optically selected sample of interacting galaxies does not have strongly enhanced normalized star formation rates ...

Physical Properties of Tidal Features in Interacting Disk Galaxies

We investigate the physical properties of tidal structures in a disk galaxy created by gravitational interactions with a companion using numerical N -body simulations. We consider a simple galaxy model consisting of a rigid halo/bulge and an infinitesimally-thin stellar disk with Toomre parameter Q ≈ 2. A perturbing companion is treated as a point mass moving on a prograde parabolic orbit, with...

Formation of a Spiral Galaxy in a Major Merger

We use numerical simulations to examine the structure of merger remnants resulting from collisions of gas-rich spiral galaxies. When the gas fraction of the progenitors is small, the remnants structurally and kinematically resemble elliptical galaxies, in agreement with earlier work. However, if the progenitor disks are gas-dominated, new types of outcomes are possible. In fact, we show that a ...

Resonant Thickening of Disks by Small Satellite Galaxies

We study the vertical heating and thickening of galaxy disks due to accretion of small satellites. Our simulations are restricted to axial symmetry, which largely eliminates numerical evolution of the target galaxy but requires the trajectory of the satellite to be along the symmetry axis of the target. We find that direct heating of disk stars by the satellite is not important because the sate...
